The meeting room in the library buzzed with energy as the author chat came to an end. Lucy moved to a table where stacks of her new book had been placed, and folks lined up for the chance to buy a signed copy.
For a last-ditch effort to save herself from embarrassment, Natalie was stunned at the eveningâs unbridled success. Absolutely no one was leaving yet, still soaking in the environment as if they had nowhere else theyâd rather be. The library was the happening spot in Rainbow Falls tonight. Who wouldâve thought?
For the past four days, ever since the unfortunate ceiling incident, Natalie had tried every trick she knew to stop herself from dwelling on whatever next disaster was sure to be coming. Sheâd done sudoku puzzles. Read books. Taken long walks. Listened to marketing podcasts. Sheâd done it all to keep her mind from focusing on the one thought flashing over her head in neon red.
FAILURE.
It was the entire reason she was in Rainbow Falls, because a daring, groundbreaking campaign sheâd planned and believed in with all her heart had gone disastrously wrong, dragging down a good company and good people in the process. After her attempt to reopen Rainbow Books had also met with calamity, Natalie hadnât been convinced sheâd ever see success again.
In the corner of the room, standing in such a way that she was nearly invisible, Natalie spied Celeste watching over the crowd. She wore a plain sweater and jeans, her hair pulled back in a no-nonsense ponytail that accentuated her chiseled cheekbones. That was probably accidental. Everything about the outfit the baker had chosen seemed designed to keep people from noticing her. For the most part it was working, but Natalieâs eyes were drawn to the woman like the proverbial moth to a flame.
Or maybe it was the crumb-covered platter next to Celeste, the one that had been piled high with apple cider donuts at the start of the night, that drew Natalieâs attention and piqued her curiosity. Not so much the platter itself, but the questions it raised in Natalieâs mind as to how it had ended up there in the first place.
The marketing material sheâd sent to Celeste had mentioned nothing about donuts. Truthfully, providing refreshments had never crossed her mind. It should haveâthe sugar and cinnamon crusted donuts and fresh, hot coffee had been a big part of the festive, almost party-like atmosphere that had made the evening such a success.
Celeste hadnât baked them. Her kitchen was out of commission, and while the owner of the inn had generously offered the use of hers to make Thanksgiving pies if it was needed, Celeste had been reticent to take her up on it. But even though Celeste hadnât physically made the treats, Natalie was sure the woman was the one behind them. The same woman who had been avoiding her all night, as if they were strangers and she preferred to keep it that way. Even now, she wouldnât turn to make eye contact.
